Welcome Reception
Please join us for antipasti, appetizers, and beverages as we kick-off this year's symposium with a welcome reception on Monday, April 29th from 5:00–7:00 pm in the Quarter Deck on the 10th floor of Tower 1.
Field Trips
Prince William Sound Glacier and Goat Cruise - The journey begins with a trip up Turnagain Arm, home to one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and where a protected population of Dall sheep graze along roadside cliffs. Once at the top of the inlet we will travel through the Chugach mountains via North America's longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel to Whittier at the head of Passage Canal in Prince William Sound. Aboard the S.S. Glacier Quest we will cruise the glaciated wilderness for 3–4 hours visiting known areas of coastal mountain goat aggregations. Lunch is provided.
Sheep Mountain & FaWNA Lab - Enjoy a scenic trip up the Glenn National Scenic Byway between the Talkeetna and Chugach ranges, to the spectacular Sheep Mountain Area which has been closed to sheep hunting since Alaska's statehood. We will enjoy a box lunch adjacent to the Matanuska Glacier and return through Palmer to spend some time touring ADF&G's Foraging Ecology and Wildlife Nutritional Analysis Lab and captive facility. Currently both caribou and moose are present at the lab.
Denali National Park Day Trip (limited participation) - This post-symposium day trip will depart Anchorage early (5:00 am) and head north up the scenic Parks Highway for the 4–5 hour drive to Denali National Park and Preserve, home of some of the most iconic Dall sheep range on the continent. If the weather cooperates, there will be several opportunities to see Denali Mountain – The Great One. Once at the Park, as spring conditions allow, three concurrent experiences will be offered, each with a cap on the number of participants: 1) a strenuous hike into Dall sheep habitat (5 hours; led by Denali National Park staff); 2) a low-exertion hike to view Dall’s sheep habitat and the natural wonders of the Park in general (led by Denali National Park staff); and 3) a visit to Denali Sled Dog Kennels and bus ride (with opportunity to do short exploratory walks) into the park as far as conditions allow. Following the hikes and bus ride, there will be a stop at the Winter Visitor Center and Visitor Center Campus before meeting with Denali National Park Management and Scientists and an evening meal. The trip will conclude with arrival back in Anchorage after 10:00 pm.
